Lincoln's Tomb is Going Green with Geothermal System

10/9/2010 | 806 Views | 0 Comments

Abraham Lincoln's tomb is going green. The state of Illinois will be replacing the tomb's old heating and cooling system with a new geothermal one. According to the Chicago Tribune Cityscapes, the new system that consists of buried pipes and wells will take advantage of the constant underground temperature and draw heat into the interior of the tomb while cooling it in the summer.

A photographic portrait is displayed showing Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. Retired physician and medical historian, Norbert Hirschhorn wrote a study that suggests Lincoln''s use of a medication in the form of a blue pill for depression contained enough mercury to cause uncontrollable bouts of anger in the President and could have eventually killed him had he not stopped taking the pills. (Photo by Hulton/Archive/Getty Images) The tomb is located in Springfield, Illinois in the Oak Ridge Cemetery where thousands visit each year to pay respect to our 16th president. David Blanchette, speaking for the state's Capital Development Board, has promised the tomb and grounds will look no different after the project is completed. The vault won't be disturbed and he said "the lawn will appear as it does now. No one will know that there's anything underneath."

This is the first of its kind system at a state historic site but expect to see more of these types of heating and cooling systems being implemented. Some home owners and business are taking advantage of the savings they realize from installing a geothermal system. Though the upfront costs are high, some of the investment can be recouped from a federal tax credit.

You've got to wonder what President Lincoln would think of this high tech attention to his burial place. Have you ever visited the tomb?
